How do you replace a computer monitor with a new one?

I am going to replace my old Gateway 2000 with a LCD Acer X163WB monitor and I was just wondering if its just a simple matter of unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one or if there is a more complex process of uninstalling software etc. Also will the stuff saved on my computer stay the same (including desktop background? Like will anything be erased due to the new monitor?

Replacing the monitor is generally very simple. As you listed, disconnect the video cable from the back of the PC case and plug in the new LCD screen to it. Where you may have an issue is if the connectors are different between the two monitors. Older displayed used an HD-15 (VGA) connector while newer displays use DVI. Fortunately most monitors ship with an adapter so it shouldn’t be a problem. If you don’t have an adapter and need one, they can be purchased for about $7-15 from a local computer shop. You may also optionally install drivers (included on the CD with the new monitor) for the monitor but most are supported by default by the operating system.

For your desktop background and screen saver, these are retained on the PC. If you changed the size or resolution of your display, you may need to go in and adjust those setting though.
